Concussion Management Program

The Athletic Training Staff of UNC Health Southeastern implemented a Concussion Management Program to improve our concussion protocols, and to ensure proper care and treatment for student-athletes who experience concussions. Goals we have met through this program include increased awareness of concussions, improved communication with doctors, coaches, athletes, parents, teachers, and other school administrators, improved treatment and follow-up care, and ensuring a safe return to play for our student-athletes. Our Athletic Trainers follow the guidelines outlined in our concussion management policy, including the Gfeller-Waller Concussion Awareness Act when treating student-athletes with suspected concussions. We also work closely with a local neurologist to ensure a safe return to play. Baseline testing is done on all athletes who participate in contact sports.

On April 29th, 2013 the Atheltic Training department received funding from UNC Health Southeastern’s Foundation to purchase the ImPACT software program. ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first, most-widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. ImPACT provides useful information to assist qualified practitioners in making sound return to play decisions following concussions. ImPACT Test Measures player symptoms; Measures verbal and visual memory, processing speed and reaction time; Assists clinicians and athletic trainers in making difficult return-to-play decisions; Provides reliable baseline test information; Produces a comprehensive report of test results which are presented as a PDF file and can be emailed; Automatically stores data from repeat testing; Testing is administered online for individuals or groups. This program has assisted the athletic trainers in the management of concussions and assisting in returning the athletes safely back to participation.
