Laboratory

UNC Health Southeastern’s CAP-Accredited Laboratory conducts many of the tests ordered by physicians who prescribe treatment based on lab results. Medical technologists perform these tests under the direction of board-certified pathologists, physicians trained in laboratory medicine.

Also available are outpatient testing, drug screen testing, allergy testing and courier service. The Blood Bank is supplied by The Blood Connection.

Convenience: Available at the Main Laboratory and Drive Thru Express Lab with no prior appointment needed.

General Information
  • Direct Access Lab Testing allows individuals to request laboratory tests and receive results without a provider’s orders or insurance involvement.
  • This service is only available for patients that are age 18 and older.
  • Direct Access Lab Testing services cannot be used on the same day you are having orders from your physician drawn.
  • Only the laboratory tests listed on this form are available.
  • Fasting for 8 to 12 hours is recommended for Glucose and Lipid Panel testing.
  • Abnormal or critical test results may require immediate medical care.
Payment and Identification
  • These tests are available Monday thru Friday at the hospital or Express Lab.
  • Testing must be paid for by cash or credit card at the time of collection. Only credit card payments are accepted at the Express Lab. Insurance is NOT accepted for Direct Access Testing.
  • Photo ID is required. Please have a picture ID available at the time of service.
Test Results and Follow-Up
  • Fasting for 8 to 12 hours is recommended for Glucose and Lipid Panel testing.
  • Results should be available within 24 hours via MyChart.
  • Reference ranges are included with the laboratory test results to assist in interpreting them or you may contact your primary care physician or go to www.labtestsonline.org for additional information.
  • UNC Health Southeastern pathologists may review abnormal results as necessary.
  • You will be contacted by phone in the event of a critical result. It is your responsibility to inform your primary care physician about abnormal or critical test results that may require immediate medical care.
