Scholarship endowment established for former CEO Anderson

Former CEO Joann Anderson and Board membersThe Boards of Trustees for UNC Health Southeastern and the Southeastern Health Foundation recently announced the establishment of a scholarship endowment fund in honor of Joann Anderson, the health system’s immediate past president and chief executive officer.

“Thank you for allowing me to be a part of what you all have been able to accomplish over the years,” said Anderson after learning about the endowment during a surprise presentation by UNC Health Southeastern Board Chairman Wayland P. Lennon, III, Southeastern Health Foundation Board Chairman Douglas B. Mills, and Southeastern Foundation Board Member Coble D. Wilson, Jr. “I appreciate everything that you have done for me.”

Among her many accomplishments while at UNC Health Southeastern, Anderson worked to establish the Medical Education program through Campbell University’s Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine as well as the management services agreement between the health system and UNC Health. She also spearheaded Foundation programs to fund an Exoskeleton system used for rehabilitation, da Vinci surgical robot system, and, most recently, the expansion of Gibson Cancer Center, to include a second linear accelerator and on-site PET scanner system.

“One of the most important things she has done over the years is to mold our team,” said Southeastern Health Foundation Executive Director Sissy Grantham. “She has brought us to the point to move us into the next era for Southeastern.”

To date, over $30,000 has been raised by numerous donors for the scholarship endowment fund to honor Anderson’s passion to support the educational and employment success of UNC Health Southeastern employees and residents of the region.  The endowed scholarship opportunity criteria will be revealed in 2022.

“We can’t thank you enough, Joann, for your guidance, tireless work and leadership through challenging times and positive change,” said Foundation Board Chairman Doug Mills. “You have had an amazing impact on UNC Health Southeastern over the past 14 years and inspired the creation of this scholarship in your honor to support future leaders who will be making their mark on our community.”

Anderson transitioned from president and CEO of the health system earlier this month. She will continue in an advisory role through the end of the year.

Individuals or businesses that would like to contribute to the fund in honor of Anderson may do so by contacting the Southeastern Health Foundation at (910) 671-5583 or giving online at and designating the funds to the Joann Anderson Endowed Scholarship Fund.
